Google Pagerank – is it important?

December 31, 2009

Today we have witnessed another Pagerank update from Google. Currently, this site’s homepage is showing as PR2 in the toolbar, up from PR0 since this site has only been live for two months (just after the last Pagerank update).

Pagerank is based on the quantity and quality of inbound links. As such, it can provide a good indication of the strength of a website. However, it is only part of the picture. It is entirely possible to obtain a good ranking, even for competitive terms, if your site has a low Pagerank value. So if you’re targetting visitors, it makes sense to concentrate more on achieving good positions in the search engines than trying to chase Pagerank.

High Pagerank, then, should be a by-product of a good link building campaign. The length of the green bar in the toolbar is not going to determine the number of visitors you get to your site. The important thing is to gain visibility in the search engines to drive targetted traffic to your website.

The obsession with Pagerank is largely due to the fact that many webmasters sell links and the price they can achieve for these links is usually based on their Pagerank. Solely using Pagerank to determine the strength of a site can be a little dangerous, however, as there are many other factors that are important. Not only this, the Pagerank you see in the toolbar can be inaccurate and outdated.

Personally, I tend not to look at Pagerank in isolation when acquiring new links. The number and quality of inbound and outbound links on the page and the location of my potential link are far more important than the Pagerank value assigned to the page.
